The real European identity

As we are all learning, 28 January was Data Protection Day. We in Britain won’t know too much about it because it is a European thing dreamed up last year by the European Council. Besides, the continentals have had ID cards since forever, and we haven’t.

James, the IT security partner at Deloitts, clearly has the measure of the government's capabilities. He threatens failing firms with unannounced audits from the Information Commissioner's Office - a typically expensive and contentious process with vast potential for unintended consequences.

Pre-announced visits might be a lot cheaper and more effective. With good route planning a single auditor could probably do ten visits a day in between tea breaks with no long reports to write afterwards, and a high possibility of fully intended consequences.
