Data breaches will continue until we take the right action

More government data breaches in the news again today. And they’ll continue to be reported, not only because we can’t completely eliminate human error, but because not enough effort is currently being focused on the right areas. The approach needed will be covered in my new book “Managing the Human Factor in Information Security“, to be published by John Wiley in January 2009. In the meantime you can read articles setting out some of my views on the problem and solution spaces in Government Technology and in the print edition of this month’s Infosecurity magazine.

Everyone agrees that data loss is a serious problem, for the private sector as well as government. All this, despite huge investments in so-called information security. Companies and government have information handling policies coming out of their ears but don't seem to have any means of measuring their effectiveness in the sphere of Information Governance. I have put together a brief outline of some practical measures that could be adopted, easily, by any organisation. My quick guide (Measures for preserving stakeholder confidence) is available as a free download from my website - see this page: http://tinyurl.com/5dmzap

Government Gateway? Or as the Radio 5 news summariser reported it in one of Sunday evening's bulletins on the story, 'the Government Getaway'.
