RFID usage has always been about more than simply being used in the retail sector, and it's very versatility means it can be adopted across a string of industries. The automotive sector is certainly one of them, and Ford promises to be one of its biggest exponents.
But this application reported in RFID Journal is not so much a parts-tracking application for RFID, as an asset-tracking solution contained within the vehicle, aimed at individuals who need to track what's in their vehicles for use on job sites. The RFID application is one of a number of so-called 'Ford Work Solutions' .
What I think is interesting from this application is that RFID is already being billed as a defined tool to solve specific problems. Not a potential solution, or a 'maybe' pilot, but a tool that works.
