Since this blog kicked off back on 21 May 2007, ComputerWeekly.com has been pleased to bring you six months of great tips and insights into business productivity from David Taylor, our "Naked Leader". But, sadly, all good things come to an end. David Taylor's schedule no longer allows him the time to blog for us, so this is the final post.

You can follow David's new initiatives online, and in the mainstream media at http://www.nakedleader.com/, and we'll be keeping the archive of existing posts online here too.

I'm sure you'll all join us us here at ComputerWeekly.com in thanking David for his contributions, and in wishing him well in his new ventures!

I was sitting at the CW Awards evening last week, and I had a sudden realisation - yes, we have made major steps forward in technology, yes we are a young "industry," however we still do not get the recognition, profile and positive perception we desire. And that is down to us, to you, to me, to everyone. Whether you agree with this is pretty much irrelevant, what counts s what your customers, peers, or (sic) USERS (think drugs) think. So, go ask them today - not by e-mail, not by phone, in person...and let me know what they say.

Agree? Great - do something about it
Disagree? Great - have a rant and do something about it, anyway

There is a plague out there - it hits us all, especially teenagers and adults. It is called low self-esteem. And it is the single biggest cause of worry, fear and poor relationships - of stress, bullying (both ways) and ultimately suicide. I am looking for tips and help that fast-track high self-esteem - share your thoughts and help each other, as well as yourself.

Agree? Great - do something about it - help a friend you know is a bit down
Disagree? Great - have a rant and do something about it, anyway

Question: Are leaders born or made?

My Answer : Made. (Although, all leaders are also born)

No, you decide - no-one has ever conclusively agreed on this - so, you decide, and make sure you choose whatever serves you best - so, if you believe leaders are born, i.e. not made, then make sure you also decide you were one of those luckier babies.

Question: I do not believe there is any such thing as a new idea - they have all gone - what do you think?

My Answer : In which case you will never have a new idea, which is great for people like me who know there are new ideas to be had all the time - because it means we will have them, and we have no competition from you, because you don't.

Question: Do you believe in luck?

My Answer : No - I believe in opportunity - moments in life come along when we spot such an opportunity - and it is then our choice whether we take it, or not. Belief plus choice = luck. “The harder I work the luckier I get.” is a famous quote from Samuel Goldwyn, also attributed to golfer Gary Player.

Do you believe in luck?

Question: Do you believe in fate?

My Answer : No - in the sense that I do not believe life is predetermined and our course is therefore set. As I said above I do believe in spotting what I call moments of truth - and it is the decisions we make in those moments that determine our destiny.

So, in the next 24 hours, look out for that single moment of truth in your life...

Question: Sorry David - talk me through dealing with a neg?

My Answer : (Stolen from here)

Approach them at their desk, ensure there are other people (witnesses) present. Remember that negs thrive by telling others that you never pay them any attention, or ask their opinion on anything. You are about to disprove this. Make idle chat, not just with neg, but with the group of people around him/her. Raise a subject about which you know neg has an interest, or skill, or is involved in their job. Then, warmly ask for their thoughts on a particular aspect of this. It is brilliant, because they cannot announce they have no thoughts! I have done this many times, and many negs have turned around - and complained about me to my face, which is exactly what I was seeking!

When negs reach positions of power they often become bullies - business bullying is becoming a big issue in organisations. If you are ever bullied - my definition is if anyone says or does something that worries or frightens you, verbally or otherwise, do something about it.

Question: Sorry David - talk me through dealing with a psychic vampire?

My Answer :

OK - Rosalind (my wife) and I were at a summer bbq when we met a lady for whom the glass was not so much half empty, it was shattered all over the ground. She was talking about which school she might send her daughter - Rosalind suggested one - the woman disagreed, saying she had heard it was "not a good school" - Rosalind said it was "ok" to which she was told it was "not" it was "one of the worst schools in the area." And so it progressed until this lady was in a right state and the atmosphere in the air was very uncomfortable.

And then Rosalind played her ace card - she thought and said "You know, thinking about it, I agree with you" - the lady said "what do you mean?" Rosalind said "I have heard bad things about that school, as well" - to which the astonishing (and expected) reply was "Well, i've heard its not that bad" and so on - as Rosalind said the school was worse and worse, each time this lady said it was better and better, until after just a few minutes she told everyone that was THE SCHOOL for her daughter. All because of the words:

"You know, thinking about it, agree with you"

That is an extreme example - when people moan, complain or have a go, agree with them - sometimes this in itself is enough to calm a situation, to make them feel more comfortable and perhaps even see your point of view.

Question: How do I deal with negs?

My Answer : Negs fall into three categories - those that simply want attention (give it to them), next, the majority - those that love to moan behind your back because it gives them some perverse pleasure, (see next) - and those that will always do so not matter what you do or say (get rid of them from your organisation).

The majority are the biggest middle group - ask their opinion, on something that you know they know something about, in front of witnesses (in the main office) and if they say they do not have an opinion, say no problem, you will come back "tomorrow" again. Always works...

My Answer : Thank you for explaining what these are! - People who suck the blood and energy from your very being by their negative comments, behaviour and approach to life.

OK - simple - and it requires great bravery - agree with them - they cannot handle it, it is the only way you can...

Question: What are the three top things we should get rid of in our IT dept.?

My Answer : Difficult - as I don't know what you have or do not have - the three most frequent monsters that IT depts have, and "should" replace, are : Service Level Agreements (Replace with Service Charters), Job Descriptions (with People Descriptions), and Comptency based anything (Focus instead on people's strengths and on using them)

Question (adapted to fit in with the above) : What are the three top things we should get rid of in our lives?

My Answer : Easy - worry (anyone who thinks that worrying about anything will change it, is living on a different planet, with an entirely different reality system), hate (it does not help you to hate anyone or anything, indeed, it actualy gives that thing you hate, even more power - next time you find yourself hating someone, say to yourself "I allow myself to hate" and your hatred will disappear, and fear (again, no help - so either feel the fear, and do it anyway or realise that one day you will close your eyes and you will die (so why would you fear anything?)

Question: Should I give cards to everyone in my team or only those people I like?

My Answer : Teams below ten people - everyone, over ten give to your closest one or two, or don't give any and give a donation to charity

Question: What is the fastest way to buy a Christmas present without it appearing the fastest - if you know what I mean?

My Answer : Get a very trusted friend to buy the present and have it gift wrapped in the shop - and for extra excitement, make sure your friend does NOT tell you what he/she has brought - then you will appear as excited when you hand it over, as you would have been if you had bought it yourself

Question: How can I find out who owns what in my department - or even in the company?

My Answer : Ask around, where do people go to, to find things out? Who do they go and see - who has the buried knowledge in an organisation? Then go see the same people

Question: What is the number one most important thing to do to ensure the success of an IT project?

My Answer : Form trusted, informal relationships - so strong that you can say and share anything with each other - perhaps privately - then you will get to the truth of the situation every day, and in every conversation

      Catch people doing things right

When you hear about someone doing well, or when a project is
delivered, personally go and thank the person. If they are several
levels “below” you (or “above” you in an upside-down
structure!) it is even more powerful. Never congratulate an
individual by e-mail, and never say what one Manager did to his
project team (of six) on completion of a successful project:

(Verbatim – I was there)

“Well done everyone, sorry I’ve only been here six months so I
don’t know all of your names – I know yours Mike, well done,
and yours Clare, no, sorry Cathy, well done. (Awkward pause).
Anyway, personally I’m amazed that it went so well. Incredible.
Well done again.” (Disappears into office).

Catch people doing things right, and express what you really feel - tomorrow may be too late
