The Law Society of Scotland, the governing body for
Scottish solicitors, has implementede-mail management servicesto cut
e-mail volumes and provide additional protection from spam and
viruses.
"The number of incoming e-mails is rising all the time, but the
number of staff has remained constant at 140," said Richard
MacLennan, IT manager for the Law Society of Scotland.
The managed anti-spam and anti-virus service from
Email Systems, which is expected to reduce the Law Society of
Scotland's unwanted incoming mail by 82%, will work in tandem with
existing filtering software to provide an extra layer of
protection.
"Although our existing system had been coping admirably, we
needed something that could deal with potentially massive volumes
of incoming mail," said MacLennan.
The Email Systems service operates in real-time to filter out
unwanted incoming mail before it is passed on to the mail servers
at the Law Society of Scotland. In a trail, 684,000 messages out of
a total sample of 830,000 messages were identified as containing
either spam or viruses.
"It is a major benefit for us that our team does not have to
manage or update the service in order for it to be effective, which
is a real bonus in terms of time," said MacLennan.
He said business continuity was an additional benefit of the
managed service. "If our mail servers or network connectivity
fails, Email Systems will be able to re-route our email messages to
an alternative location."
