Car maker Peugeot is deploying 10,000 BlackBerry Z10 smartphones across its Spanish and French operations to provide staff with access to confidential information.

The company will also deploy BlackBerry’s enterprise mobility management (EMM) platform, BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 (BES 10).

Eric Marchand, head of telecoms at PSA Peugeot Citroën, said: "Every day, our employees need to share and access confidential information.

"With BES10, we are assured that the confidentiality of our information is maintained, while also ensuring that Peugeot’s employees can enjoy the best experience for personal as well as professional use."

BlackBerry said nearly 30,000 BES 10 commercial and test servers have been deployed globally.

The BlackBerry BES 10 platform supports iOS, Android and BlackBerry smartphones, according to interim CEO John Chen, who turned ailing database company Sybase into a mobile software company and is hoping to refocus BlackBerry on security for the mobile enterprise.

In an open letter, Chen wrote: "BYOD [bring your own device] users may be able to bring any device to work, but it’s our job to ensure the risk doesn’t follow them in. Whether you’re deploying corporate-owned iPads or allowing BYOD Android devices, security is paramount."

He said BlackBerry’s unique selling point is that it has more certifications from government agencies than any other supplier.

In spite of the boost in devices deployed, analyst company 451 Research has reported that BlackBerry’s devices business has been in decline since 2008, and that selling it off will reduce costs, enabling it to focus on the improvement and deployment of BES 10 across all mobile device platforms, which may mean a move away from BlackBerry Enterprise Server could be avoided.
