Do you have a professional IT qualification?

Do you have a professional IT qualification?

72% Yes

28% No

The Big Question is an initiative between Computer Weekly and recruitment consultancy PSD. Each week we put the Big Question to top IT professionals to get their take on a current talking point.

As the British Computer Society steps up its drive for professionalism in the IT industry, this week's Big Question poll has revealed that most IT professionals can boast IT-specific skills accreditation.

Many respondents said that gaining qualifications had improved their job prospects. Mark Stenning, a configuration manager, said, "I am a member of the BCS because my degree was an accredited course.

"I chose this route because I thought it would help me to appear more professional to prospective employers. I am also qualified in Prince2, which took four weeks of study (after four years doing the job). The simple reason for putting myself through it was that it would make me more attractive to employers."

Darren Peist, a platform administrator, was another who said that qualification held the key to advancement.

"I have worked in IT for three years and I am currently studying for an MCSE [Microsoft certified systems engineer], which I hope will give me a better understanding of Microsoft technologies and improve my prospects."

However, 28% of those polled said they had no formal IT qualification.

IT administrator John De Silva said, "I do not have a qualification and, having been in IT for 20 years, I have not found that I need to get a qualification. This has not held back my career. I have always been approached by informal means for the roles I have had. But if I needed to get accredited, I would be happy to take on the study."
