Beware the quad-rotor swarm!

A swarm of intelligent quad-rotors that respond to hand gestures may sound like science fiction, but researchers at the University of Illinois in the US are taking this scenario one step closer to reality.
A team at the institution’s Aerospace Robotics and Control Laboratory has demonstrated that it is possible to create and control a swarm of flying minions, according to Stuff.
But adding just a frisson for fear, the quad-rotors are already intelligent enough to detect and avoid collisions with humans and other obstacles.
From there it is not difficult to imagine how one day, such swarms may become autonomous, rather than dancing to the whims of a human controller.
The potential use of such swarms for NSA style surveillance hardly bears thinking about. Could 2014 be the year of the autonomous surveillance quad-rotor?
