Accenture is planning to increase its workforce in India by
8,000, in another sign that India will continue to be the leading
offshore destination for business and IT services.
This follows Capgemini's decision earlier this month to
open a new business information unit in Bangalore. This took
its total workforce in India to 21,000 - more than in its home
country France.
Robert Morgan, director at consultancy Hamilton Bailey, said
India is still the most popular place for offshore services and is
likely to continue to be so for between five and eight years.
However, he said the growth of Indian outsourcing is slowing
from being 20-plus per cent a year to the teens.
"There will in the long term be a lot of pressure from China and
there has already been some chipping away. South America and North
Africa have been talking some business," he said.
Accenture said it currently has 42,000 employees in India but
hopes to have 50,000 by the end of 2010.
