Collaboration service Huddle.net, which supports the
LinkedIn and Facebook social network sites, has launched its online
collaboration application onNing,
the platform for creating social networks.
Huddle Workspaces is now a part of the Ning Apps, suite of
applications for social networking. Andy McLoughlin, co-founder and
product director at Huddle.net, said: "Huddle is a platform in its
own right, but we recognise our users' wish to access it from
whatever social network they are a part of. We won't be stopping
here. We will be launching on another major social network in the
very near future."
Until now developers have been able to create applications for
one individual or profile, who could then share them with his/her
network one friend at a time. Huddle claims that Huddle on Ning is
the first time an application can be made available to all users on
a social network site, not just individual profile pages. The
company said Huddle on Ning offers the key features of its online
collaboration platform including secure, private workspaces for
secure team collaboration, document sharing and discussions. Each
user receives 1Gb of free storage and can invite others and work
together with unlimited connections.
Huddle on Ning is designed to enable social network site
operators to design intranets for their groups, share confidential
information or store a networks' documentation. Huddle said users
can use its document management tools and create and edit documents
online in .doc and .xls format. They can post comments on files,
request approvals and send notifications. Documents can also be
locked and checked out of the system for offline editing. All
activity in a workspace is recorded and can be delivered via an RSS
feed.
Ning users can also connect with people and share content in the
wider Huddle network and other
networks where Huddle is available such as LinkedIn and Facebook.
They also gain access to additional features including: audio and
web conferencing, tasks, whiteboards, audit trails, version control
and multi-lingual interface.
Huddle has already proven a popular collaboration tool amongst
the UK and global organisations including P&G, Boots, Nokia and
UNICEF as well as the government. It is also the first
collaboration application accessible from two other major social
networks: LinkedIn and Facebook.
