Qualcomm makes femtocell investment in ip.access

Qualcomm, the 3G chipset company, is the latest company to invest in UK mobile femtocell specialist, ip.access.

Ip.access uses a number of network systems - including Oyster 3G femtocell package - to route 3G mobile operators' signals inside buildings.

The Oyster 3G technology uses a residential broadband connection to deliver a high-quality 3G signal in the home. A number of network operators worldwide are trialling the technology.

Consumers and businesses use femtocell technology to boost 3G signals in buildings. This improves the quality of voice and data-based mobile signals on shared connections.

The technology is seen as an alternative to Wi-Fi routers.

Qualcomm joins Cisco, Intel Capital, ADC, Motorola Ventures, Scottish Equity Partners, Rothschild Gestion and Amadeus Capital Partners in taking a stake in the firm.

Qualcomm has not disclosed the scale of its investment.
