Labour peer and chairman of the E-Learning Foundation,
Lord Mitchell, has warned of an "IT literacy time
bomb".
Parry Mitchell spoke at a seminar on IT in education in London
last week, hosted by IT finance provider Syscap.
He spoke about issues surrounding the use of
ICT in education, and said that not having IT skills "will soon
be as serious as not being able to read."
"Every single child should have access to a device that enables
personalised learning," he said, "Teachers and parents need to
champion the use of IT, both in school and at home. The concept of
9am to 3:30pm learning is a thing of the past."
He said children will need IT to compete in the job market.
"There are few jobs that do not require any IT so people without
these skills will become increasingly disadvantaged."
