TheBritish standard for business continuitypublished this week can help organisations differentiate from the competition and become more agile, according to Sungard Availability Services.

The BS 25999 standard establishes definitions of key business continuity processes, and lays down guidelines for the development, testing and analysis of business continuity plans.

Organisations are independently audited and accredited against the standard to provide business continuity assurances to employees, customers and partners.

"It is hard to overstate the importance of BS 25999 - not just to the organisations that adopt it, but to the UK economy as a whole," said Keith Tilley, managing director UK and senior vice-president Europe, SunGard Availability Services.

Tilley said the impact of BS25999 was likely to be very far-reaching in sectors such as finance, retail and manufacturing where the large players will look to do business only with suppliers that can prove that they have BS25999 accreditation.

Sungard, which was directly involved in the development of the BSI British Standards BS 25999 specification, is the first business continuity organisation to be certified against the standard, receiving full accreditation for its European headquarters.
