Scores of IT directors had voice impact sessions at this week's IT Directors Forum at the event, on board the cruise ship Arcadia.
All were concerned to improve the effectiveness of their communication with their peers in business and were coached by ex-opera singer Nicolette Wolf, director of consultancy Marcus-Wolf..
Wolf said that 38% of the effectiveness of communicating a message is due to the quality of verbal tone and quality of voice. Only 7% is due to the actual words used, while 55% is down to non verbal elements such as body language.
"Think of the voice as a bell muffled with sackcloth," she said. "Opera training techniques can release the tension and enable the voice to ring true." She added that these techniques do not rely on the voice box alone, but enable people to use their frame as an amplifier for the voice. Exercises with timbre, pitch and volume can, she said, improve the effectiveness of communicating messages within the organisation.
