Global Crossing is introducing a new converged IP voice and data network services platform for the UK rail industry, to save customers money and offer new services.
The platform is an upgrade to Global Crossing’s existing RailNet system, the dedicated network the provider uses to deliver managed voice services to 65,000 users across the rail community.
RailNet users include national infrastructure operator Network Rail, major train and freight operators, and other UK rail companies.
Global Crossing is upgrading or replacing Railnet’s exchanges to make the network IP-compatible to fully support converged voice and data services, to enable customers to save money from cheaper communications.
Additional features will also allow users to take advantage of new services such as universal messaging (users contactable via different communications platforms using a single number), mobile network integration and hot-desking facilities.
Global Crossing expects to complete most of the upgrade in 2006.
