SonicWall and Symantec are both launching new “unified threat management” solutions to provide comprehensive protection and easier security management to network managers.

The security appliances from the two companies offer all-in-one protection using fast gigabit Ethernet data scanning speeds. They include a firewall, virus protection, an SSL-based virtual private network and anti-spyware features.

SonicWall is launching the Pro 4100 appliance, and Symantec has unveiled the Gateway Security 5600 Series appliances, which scale up to 3Gbps (gigabits per second) in data throughput.

Analyst IDC says worldwide expenditure on unified threat management appliances more than tripled from 2003 to 2004 to over £195m – a figure which is set to double this year.
