Google has launched a desktop and web search facility that automatically stores personal and search information.
Google Desktop 2 is a downloadable sidebar which displays and manages e-mail, instant messages, RSS news feeds, music, and web searches.
The prominence given to certain applications and data in the sidebar is automatically tailored to users’ regular use.
As well as being able to search a user’s hard disk on their own home machine, the service can also be configured to connect to a machine the user has in their office, to enable them to access and manage work data remotely from the same interface.
Similar types of services have already recently been launched by the likes of Yahoo, Microsoft and AOL.
