Swansea Council's service@-swansea IT outsourcing project, which is at the centre of a seven-week strike by IT staff, will cost £150m over 10 years, according to the council - up 50% on the £100m estimate given a month ago.

A report into the project prepared for a special council meeting last week revealed that providing new technology and consultancy services would cost a total of £100m over 10 years.

But another £5m a year would have to be paid out for acquiring a call centre to house the scheme, a city centre drop-in shop for residents, and for transfer costs in switching to a private company to run the project.

Council leader Chris Holley said, "The savings will be sizeable and the costs will be kept within this budget [of £150m]."

The scheme aims to replace 200 phone numbers with a one-stop call centre and single number.
