The IT industry aims to raise more than £50,000 at this summer's Intellect ICT Charity Ball to help seriously ill children.

The theme for this year's ball, which takes place in London on 7 July, is "A Night at the Movies", and it promises all the glamour of a Hollywood-style event.

All IT professionals, whether users, consultants or suppliers, are welcome at the ball, whose patrons include the Duke of Westminster and the Earl of Erroll.

The event, supported by Computer Weekly and the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists, will help the Starlight Children's Foundation provide entertainment in hospitals throughout the UK.

Starlight, founded in 1987, helps more than 400,000 children a year. Its activities are aimed at distracting them from the fear, pain and isolation they feel as a result of their illness.

Since 2000, the Intellect ICT Industry Ball has raised more than £150,000 for worthy causes. Last year it donated £50,000 to child autism charity the Treehouse Trust.

The event is sponsored by Atos Origin, EDS, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, OKI, Sx3, and Veritas. It is organised by the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists and IT suppliers organisation Intellect.

Tables of 10 at the ball are priced £1,950. Tickets can also be purchased individually for £195 each.
