Aviva hires Monique Shivanandan as CIO

Cliff Saran

Monique Shivanandan, the CTO at Capital One, will be moving over to head up IT in the role of CIO at Aviva in May.

Shivanandan, who has worked at Capital One since 2010, previously held the post of CIO and managing director at BT.

Shivanandan will report to Mark Wilson, group chief executive officer. Commenting on the appointment, Wilson said: "Monique is a first-class chief information officer. She has a strong background leading and transforming digital capabilities at major companies. Monique will play an important role in Aviva’s turnaround, ensuring we use new technology to serve our customers and partners simply and effectively."

Shivanandan takes over from Cathryn Riley, who was CIO and chief of the insurance firm until late last year.

At the start of 2013, former HMRC CIO Phil Pavitt joined Aviva as its IT transformation director to rationalise and simplify Aviva’s IT.

In May 2013, union Unite accused Aviva of betraying UK workers after it emerged that 600 of its 2,000 job cuts were being relocated to India.

The insurer has a 10 year £700m outsourcing deal with EDS (now owned by HP), which was signed in 2010.
