BlackBerry hires ex-HTC exec to lead devices

In the latest in a raft of new hires by BlackBerry CEO John Chen, the company appoints Ron Louks as its head of devices and emerging solutions

BlackBerry today announced Ron Louks would be taking over as the president of devices and emerging solutions at the firm.

Louks is joining the struggling mobile manufacturer after just six months as CEO of the OpenNMS Group - an organisation supporting the open-source network management platform - but he previously held senior roles at both HTC and Sony Ericsson.

He is the latest in a long line of hires by the recently appointed CEO at BlackBerry, John Chen, who is shaking up the executive board in hope of saving the ailing company.

Chen said the new recruit would focus on the long-term product roadmap for BlackBerry, including hardware, software and design, as well as joint development efforts, perhaps in reference to the recent announcement of a partnership with Foxconn.

“I am confident that Ron will bring the skills and expertise that will make an immediate impact to BlackBerry and to our customers around the world,” said Chen.

The future of BlackBerry still remains uncertain after a $4.7bn buyout bid from its largest shareholder, Fairfax Holdings, fell through and other interested parties seemed to be falling into the shadows.

Its latest results showed operating losses of $4.4bn and a 56% drop in revenues over just one year, making investors nervous about how it can come back from such a turn in fortunes.

However, Chen remained positive that he could turn the company around and needed a new team to achieve his goal.

"On our path to return BlackBerry to profitability, nothing is more important than remaining deeply connected to our customers, and designing and delivering secure products that exceed their expectations," he said.
