Make Things Do Stuff campaign launched to encourage digital creativity

A nationwide campaign to encourage more young people not only to use digital technologies, but to create them, has been launched. UK businesses are being encouraged to back the campaign, which is set to teach 100,000 young people digital skills this summer.

The Make Things Do Stuff campaign, backed by chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne, was announced at an event at the Roundhouse – a digital making workshop for teenagers.

Led by Mozilla, Nesta and Nominet Trust, the campaign aims to bring together big businesses, such as Facebook and O2 Telefonica, with those that are already providing digital skills to young people in the UK, such as Code Club.

Campaign partners O2, Freeformers, Jagex, Stardoll, Apps for Good and Young Rewired State have committed to offer workshops, coding clubs and competitions over the coming summer – ending with Campus Party, a week-long, 24-hours-a-day technology festival at the O2.

Stressing the importance of the development of digital skills for future jobs, Osborne said: “Over the past few years, the UK’s digital economy has boomed. But we cannot take this success story for granted. The government is investing in our digital infrastructure and putting computer science at the heart of the curriculum. And I am delighted to be launching the Make Things Do Stuff campaign.

“By offering digital training to 100,000 youngsters in the coming months alone, this campaign is backing the entrepreneurs of the future and helping ensure that Britain is equipped to succeed in the global race.”
