Department of Health signs £74m desktop deal with Atos

Kathleen Hall

The Department of Health (DH) has signed a £74m five-year contract with Atos for integrated IT desktop services. The department said the contract will result in 40% savings.

Under the contract Atos will provide service support for the department and some of its agencies such as the Care Quality Commission, through a shared services arrangement. As part of the deal Atos will provide an internal communication programme, staff training, and datacentre infrastructure.

Atos said it will use open source software and work with SMEs to provide the government with a value-for-money service.

However, the supplier was not able to provide any more details as to how it would use open source or engage more small businesses. A spokesman said Atos will use open source where it is the best solution to meet business requirements and work with a number of SMEs dependent on the project and its requirements.
