VMware is making available preview versions of its View client software for the Kindle Fire, Mac and Linux, along with updates to the Android and iPad clients.

View is VMware’s desktop virtualisation software, which is being positioned as a way to empower staff and make them more productive by providing Windows virtual desktops.

“More and more people want the freedom to choose the device that best fits their computing needs in school and in the workplace,” said Pat Lee, director, end user clients, at VMware. He said View clients offer IT departments secure and accessible virtual desktops.

According to VMware, the education sector is leading the way in terms of multi-device support, by offering both Mac and Windows desktops as well as letting students use their own tablets, laptops and PCs that are based on OS X, Windows and other platforms.

The introduction of the new VMware View clients for Mac and Linux will enable campus IT organisations to better support these end users and help ensure that students have readily available access to their applications and a consistent learning experience across devices, said VMware.
