NLPG property database made available to private companies

Today sees the commercial launch of the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG), the first complete list of property addresses available for England and Wales since the Domesday Book.

Available electronically to commercial users for the first time, the NLPG provides the unique identification and location of properties to sub-postcode level.

Future uses of the NLPG are potentially huge, from wider public sector use to commercial applications in insurance, customer profiling, logistics and satellite navigation.

The commercial availability of the National Land and Property Gazetteer is a milestone for the local government project, involving all 376 district and unitary authorities in the country, and directed by the Improvement and Development Agency (Idea) and private sector technology partner Intelligent Addressing.

It is based on the definitive list of standardised and authoritative addresses from local authorities in England and Wales. Each property is given a unique property reference number (UPRN), which transcends current property numbers, names, descriptions and postcodes.

UPRNs are assigned for the full life of the plot and/or building from planning approval to demolition.

Steve Brandwood, geographic information team programme manager at Idea, said, "Every local authority in England and Wales is now committed to the National Land and Property Gazetteer process.

"Putting in place a commercial license for the data will enable all sectors to benefit from an address gazetteer regularly maintained at source, and including the key for efficiently linking datasets, the UPRN."
