University Think Lab to 'rival the MIT'

Computer Weekly Staff

A futuristic virtual environment centre, said to be the only one of its kind in Europe and the most advanced in the world, was officially launched at the University of Salford on 16 February 2007.

The Think Lab is aimed at harnessing leading IT developments to solve current and future challenges of industry, commerce and the community.

The lab is the first phase of an initiative sponsored by the Higher Education Funding Council for England to establish a technology research centre that could "stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of the MIT [Massachusetts Institute of Technology] in the US", said David Roberts, one of two scientific directors at the lab.
