Chart management system set to slash updating time

The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO), which provides seafarers with worldwide navigational charts, is using Tower Software's Trim Context electronic document and records management (EDRM) product to manage more than 3,000 navigational charts and publications.

Tim Squire, technical director of UKHO, said, "The resulting capability provided by this work will transform the way the organisation handles incoming material."

About 300 cartographers and chart plotters working at the Taunton, Somerset-based operation will use the system as part of a Source Data Receipt and Assessment (SDRA) project.

The SDRA project aims to capture all source data digitally and distribute it around the organisation. This should dramatically shorten the time scale for altering charts.

BAE Systems is leading the project to capture all incoming hydrographic source data and, where required, convert this into digital format.
