Supermarket group agrees support deal

Somerfield supermarket stores has agreed a three-year hardware and equipment support contract with Wincor Nixdorf.

Wincor Nixdorf will provide support for more than 1,300 stores across the UK under the Somerfield and Kwik Save brand names.

The contract covers support for 14,000 lanes of third-party point-of-sale equipment, plus associated in-store peripherals and back-office hardware.

About 180,000 pieces of equipment are covered under the contract, said Wincor Nixdorf.

John Pelling, Somerfield head of application services, said, "With Wincor Nixdorf we will improve up-time for store systems and significantly improve response times to stores, and improve our overall service levels to customers."

Somerfield last year undertook a major project to computerise its product development process by adopting a Web-based system.
