Microsoft and BT target SMEs with pay-as-you-go e-mail service

Arif Mohamed
Microsoft and BT have launched a pay-as-you-go business service for small and medium-sized businesses that want e-mail and shared calendars and contacts without initial capital outlay.

BT will use Microsoft Solution for Hosted Exchange 2003, a pre-engineered and pre-tested software package for service providers, which will allow BT to support between 30,000 and several million e-mail accounts.

BT will also use Microsoft Biztalk Server 2004 to view and access data and service information, so it can bill customers quickly and efficiently, said Microsoft.

SMEs "generally have not had access to the IT services larger companies take for granted", said Neil Macehiter, research director at Ovum.
