Faced with a sharp decline in advertising incomes, some UK media firms have turned to charging for content delivered to handheld devices in a bid to increase revenues.

The Irish Independent this week joined the Independent, Daily Telegraph, Glasgow Herald and News Quest in offering an online subscription service for PDAs.

The Irish Independent service, based on technology from payment processing firm WorldPay, will help the paper to reach new audiences, according to Mark Lawlor, managing director of independent.ie and the company's multi-publication portal unison.ie.
