Clusters boost Check Point VPN performance

Check Point Software is set to release technology that will help boost speed and reliability for users of Check Point firewalls and virtual private networks (VPNs).

A VPN is a secure method of using the public Internet as an extension of the corporate network.

ClusterXL allows administrators to group VPN gateways or firewalls together to share their performance in case one of the devices fails, said Mike Lee, Check Point's product marketing manager.

If one device fails, the other devices in the cluster can seamlessly resume service, thereby improving reliability, he added. ClusterXL can be used with either Check Point software or appliances.

The company touts VPN performance of up to 1.2Gbps using the product.

ClusterXL requires the use of Check Point's Next Generation system. The technology is aimed at large enterprises and service providers with large data centres, Lee said.

ClusterXL will be available worldwide in December.
