IBM is offering selected models of its pSeries Unix servers for auction via the eBay Internet trading site, writes Nicholas Enticknap.

The sale follows a successful pilot auction of a p680 server over the Christmas period. This latest auction started on 12 March and runs through to 22 March.

IBM European server channel manager Martin Beckwith said this will be "the first of a series of public auctions". Products that IBM plans to offer in this way in future include xSeries (PC) servers, storage products and pSeries models. All will be offered in packaged configurations that include service elements.

IBM is hoping to raise the proportion of its server sales made electronically to 10% by the end of the year.
