Microsoft Sharepoint Portal Server is essentially a portal with a powerful search engine which can recognise a wide range of file formats stored in a variety of locations on corporate networks and allow them to be managed.

Gary Tugwell-Smith, Sharepoint Portal Server product manager, said, "The beauty of this product is that it allows powerful searching using a consistent front-end. Companies will be able to make use of existing knowledge."

But, Eric Woods of analyst firm Ovum warned companies to think before leaping into an implementation.

"Lack of focus is one of the big problems in intranet/portal development - it is important to identify priority areas within the business that can benefit from better information access, delivery and management and to go for quick wins that build confidence among users and experience of the technology," he said.

"Microsoft has gone for an ambitious offering rather than bringing out elements piecemeal. This is the right move and makes it an exciting offering - but getting all the pieces to work effectively will not be easy," he added.
