Tivoli is promising to bring the benefits of system managed storage (SMS) to the open systems world with its Storage Tank initiative, which was formally launched last month.

Storage Tank will be delivered via software called Tivoli Open System Managed Storage, which will ship in the second half of this year. This unusually long gap between announcement and delivery is because Tivoli feels the support is not yet there.

“The time has arrived when people are asking for what mainframe users got in the 1980s,” said Tivoli storage management marketing manager Robin Pilcher. “But the environment is not quite there today.”

SMS allows the management of data assets, from creation to deletion, according to policies set by a storage administrator. It has been available on IBM mainframes since IBM launched DFSMS (data facility storage management system), and today virtually all mainframes are configured with SMS software, but nobody is yet offering it on open systems.

As a result mainframe storage administrators can manage about 7Tbytes of storage, while their open systems counterparts can manage only 250 to 500Gbytes. “What we are delivering to the customer is productivity,” said Pilcher.
