"Government" email attack targets Australian domains

Watch out for attachments supposedly sent from government departments, MessageLabs warns.

MessageLabs has warned of an email attack targeted at Australian domains that appears to have been sent from a government department.

Attached to the attacking email is a Microsoft PowerPoint file that contains a malicious Trojan.

Andrew Antal, MessageLabs’ country manager, said the attack fakes the route of the email by using email headers from a legitimate email, captured by the attackers days earlier.

In doing so, the email claims to have passed through MessageLabs’ AV infrastructure.

“Each of the recipients would regard the email as coming from a trusted source,” he said.
