Enterprise disk buying guide - Intel

We continue our guide to enterprise disks with a look at Intel's new range of solid state disks.

This Article Covers

Storage

Seagate and Western Digital, companies we have previously covered in this guide, are established titans of the disk drive industry.

Intel, by contrast, is a new entrant and as befits a company built on silicon, it eschews spinning platters and magnetoresistant media in favour of solid state disks (SSDs).

Below, you'll find details of Intel's three current SSD models:

Intel X25-E Extreme SATA Solid-State Drive

Intel X25-M and X18-M Mainstream SATA Solid-State Drives - 50nm edition

Intel X25-M and X18-M Mainstream SATA Solid-State Drives - 34nm edition

Intel X25-E Extreme SATA Solid-State Drive

Form factor- 2.5" x 7mm

Capacity - 32GB and 64GB

Interface(s) - SATA 1.5 Gb/s and 3.0 Gb/s

Cache - Write cache enabled

Working power consumption - Active: 2.4W Typical (server workload)
Active power is measured on an IOMeter workload of full bandwidth 64K sequential writes with queue depth 1

Idle power consumption - Idle (DIPM): 0.06 W Typical

Mean time between failure - 2 Million hours

Intended role - Servers, storage and workstations

Intel X25-M and X18-M Mainstream SATA Solid-State Drives - 50nm edition

Form factor -Available in 1.8" and 2.5" Form Factors

Capacity -80 GB and 160 GB

Interface(s) -SATA 1.5 Gb/s and 3.0 Gb/s

Cache -Write cache enabled

Working power consumption -Active: 150mW Typical (PC workload)
Active power is measured during execution of MobileMark 2007 Productivity 2007 benchmark. Drive will initiate DIPM request to the host if idle for 25msec whether or not standby or sleep command is received. If DIPM request is acknowledged, drive will enter idle power mode.

Idle power consumption -Idle (DIPM): 60mW Typical

Mean time between failure -1.2 million hours

Intended role -Notebook and desktop PCs

Intel X25-M and X18-M Mainstream SATA Solid-State Drives - 34nm edition

Form factor - 1.8" and 2.5"

Capacity - 80 GB and 160 GB

Interface(s) - SATA 1.5 Gb/s and 3.0 Gb/s

Cache - Write cache enabled
