Over a quarter of UK workers are risking personal relationships
and revealing company information using mobile technology to work
from bed for up to six hours a week.
Research of 300 workers based in London's Canary Wharf, from
security supplier Credant Technologies, also revealed that 8% of
people spend more time on their mobile devices during the evening
than talking to their partners.
Not only are these workers risking their long-term partnerships
but they are risking company data at the same time. A total of 44%
said they have important work documents on their mobile devices and
half of these said they were not properly secured.
Michael Callahan, vice-president at Credant Technologies, said:
"With increasing pressures on companies to comply with regulations,
such as the Data Protection Act, we all have to respect our
customers and employers by protecting the data held on our mobile
devices, wherever we may be."
Five
Tips from Credant
1 -If your laptop or mobile device contains sensitive data
relating to your employer, the Data Protection Act requires it be
adequately protected. Ask your IT department to encrypt the mobile
device.
2 - Always use a strong password, combining numbers, letters and
symbols, to access your device or network.
3 - Be aware of all the points of connection and access so you
don't risk disclosure.
4 - Don't leave your mobile device open to access (for
example, leaving Bluetooth or WiFi turned on) somewhere visible and
unsecured.
5 - Finally, use your bedroom for what it's designed for. And,
if you're not feeling sleepy, your laptop is the last thing you
should be turning to.
