Proxim unveils Wimax/Wi-Fi mesh kit

Proxim has unveiled a new range of wireless access products that support Wimax, Wi-Fi mesh, and Wi-Fi access all in one system.

The MeshMax offering provides significant benefits to service providers, municipalities, and customers planning to deploy Wi-Fi mesh and Wimax, said Proxim.

MeshMax enables a new deployment architecture that increases the capacity of mesh networks, simplifies their deployment, and provides outdoor mobility for existing Wi-Fi users.

Daryl Schoolar, an analyst at In-Stat, said, “Proxim’s MeshMax is the right product line at the right time.

The convergence of Wimax and mesh is a natural evolution in broadband wireless, as it maximises the strengths of both technologies.”

Wi-Fi mesh sees Wi-Fi access points placed in outside locations and connected to each other over long distances to create a mesh network using relay technology. Wimax allows users to get wireless broadband where there is no fixed broadband service.

Both technologies are suited for rural areas, but urban municipalities also see the solutions as ideal ways to easily link up whole towns.

Proxim says MeshMax products are currently being evaluated by several service providers in a number of countries.
