Outsourcing and managed services did top the government’s IT bill in 2009, but I don’t think this is particularly surprising. In my opinion a key reason why organisations are turning to outsourcing is to gain greater visibility over spending and ROI, and also better prepare for unpredictable requirements such as a sudden need for increased storage capacity or a project that needs dedicated IT staff for example. In fact, IDC has forecasted that worldwide outsourcing services to increase by 5.8 per cent in the next five years and Gartner recently reported that nearly half of businesses will adopt some level of managed services in the next 12 months.
