Buckinghamshire man brings touch of refinement to Santa Pod

Downtime sends warmest congratulations to Perry Watkins for setting the world land speed record for a piece of furniture.

Mr Watkins, from Buckinghamshire, drove a Queen Anne table – complete with lace cloth, candelabra and what looked suspiciously like a bottle of champagne in an ice bucket – at speeds of up to 130mph at Santa Pod, obliterating the previous record, set by a sofa, of 92mph.

The dining room furniture – named “Fastfood” and with seating for six – used a nitrous oxide-injected twin port Rover 3500cc V8 engine and a Reliant Scimitar Sabre chassis to achieve the record.

It was Mr Perry’s third record, having previously achieved celebrity with the world’s flattest and smallest cars.
