BT has confirmed that power cuts at a major exchange caused internet outages on BT Broadband.

BT has confirmed that power cuts at a major exchange caused internet outages on BT Broadband.

"Our engineers are on-site and the majority of customers' service has already been restored. We are working to restore service to any remaining customers as soon as possible this afternoon. Should any customers continue to experience difficulty in accessing their broadband service, they are advised to reboot their modem or contact their ISP," BT said.

According to reports on Twitter, the power issues affected an exchange in Birmingham and much of the UK has been affected.

BT has not released details on the cause of the power outage.
