Schools use pupil analysis data to drive up exam results

Schools using analysis of pupil data in their management information systems (MIS) are helping drive up their exam results.

The schools are using the SIMS MIS platform from Capita to improve results. The schools are using assessment data to track individual pupil performance over time.

The information is used to target learning to the individual pupil's needs and to identify when extra teaching support is required. This allows any learning issues to be addressed swiftly, as soon as they are recognised.

Carmel RC College in Darlington has seen an improvement in the number of pupils achieving five A* to C grades, including maths and English, by 16% from 2006 to 2007, because of an increased use of pupil performance data.

Janice Gorlach, vice-principal at the college, said, "The dramatic improvement can be directly attributed to our dynamic teaching team using the extensive pupil tracking system in our management information system."

Other schools have also seen impressive results. Neil Bradford, deputy head at Featherstone High School in Ealing London, said, "The enhanced knowledge that the teachers and children now have of their progress, all made possible via the information in our MIS, has directly led to a 12% improvement in pupils gaining five or more A* to C grades including maths and English at GCSE level in the last year alone."

John Gregory, vice-principal of Minsthorpe Community College in West Yorkshire, where the percentage of pupils achieving five A* to C grades including English and maths increased from 34% in 2006 to 42% in 2007, said, "The use of SIMS to track and monitor specific target groups of students has contributed significantly to this 8% increase."
