A leading thinker on IT security has urged IT departments to integrate their security and operations functions if they want to get the most out of their IT spending.

A leading thinker on IT security has urged IT departments to integrate their security and operations functions if they want to get the most out of their IT spending.

Merging the two functions is the key to making organisations more agile and improving their brand value, said Howard Schmidt, US government cyber security adviser and former head of IT security at eBay and Microsoft.

Writing in Computer Weekly, Schmidt said, "Every step you take towards operationalising your security also securitises your operations, with accompanying benefits in brand equity, agility and speedy delivery of new products and services."
