Bill will harm net neutrality, Cerf warns

Father of the web Vint Cerf has warned there will be "great damage to the internet as we know it" if a bill before US legislature is not strengthened to protect net neutrality.

Cerf, who jointly developed the web protocol TCP/IP, told Computer Weekly that unless the communications legislation is strengthened it will allow broadband internet service providers to charge for premium internet services, potentially creating a two-tier internet.

"Phone companies can't tell consumers who they can call, and network operators should not dictate what people can do online," he said.
