Motorola has announced record sales of $8.16bn (£4.53bn) for the first quarter, an increase of 10% on the same quarter last year.

Motorola posted increases in sales and profits for both its main mobile devices and networks markets, and claims it now has 17.1% of the global market in mobile phones, making it the number two player behind Nokia.

Motorola shipped 28.7 million mobile devices during the first quarter, an increase of 13% compared with the same quarter last year.

The company is thought to be planning to launch a mobile phone that can handle iTunes from Apple later this year in a move designed to raise consumer sales of its handsets further.
