Online sales up 64% on Xmas 2003

Online sales took off at Christmas, with online retailer Amazon recording its largest number

of shipments to date. It dispatched more than 400,000 items on its busiest day.

The UK’s largest internet retailer experienced record sales, with nearly 750,000 shoppers using the site during December. More than 600,000 grocery orders were made and it reported record deliveries before Christmas.

The Interactive Media in Retail Group estimated that £4bn was spent online by shoppers in the run up to Christmas - a 64% increase from the previous year.
