The Internet Protocol will fuel convergence between 3G mobile, Internet and fixed networks, according to the Mobile Wireless Internet Forum (MWIF).

A feasibility study by the MWIF into the use of IP in the radio access network (Ran) - the mobile backbone - found that IP was as good as, or better than, the incumbent ATM-based standard.

MWIF is recommending the adoption of IP in the Ran for 3G mobile networking, citing cost benefits, flexibility and scalability advantages.
