The Apple iPad is vulnerable to the iPhone Ikee worm, says PandaLabs, the antimalware research arm of Panda Security.
The malware, originally aimed at jailbroken iPhones, can infect iPads because they use the same operating system.
This does not mean there will be an avalanche of infections, said Luis Corrons, technical director of PandaLabs.
But, as Apple takes more market share, cyber-crooks will show more interest in targeting those that use this platform, he said.
"We are certainly beginning to see more proofs of concept, and so we would advise all Mac users to follow the manufacturer's recommendations to maximise security on their operating systems," said Corrons.
