Nokia has confirmed its newly launched5800 touch-screen smartphonein the US is having problems connecting to 3G networks.

Flagship outlets in the US have suspended sales in the phone - targeted as a competitor to the Apple iPhone - after users were able to connect to GPRS networks but not faster 3G ones.

The Apple iPhone 3G dominates the US market in terms of new high-end smartphone sales, and the Nokia 5800 glitch will mean the Finnish firm will lose even more ground in the lucrative US market.

A Nokia spokeswoman told BBC News, "A small number of devices are not connecting with 3G networks and we are looking through that right now."

But, she said, the phone continued to be sold in "certain network areas".
