The 10 US technology firms that pay their engineers the most
have been revealed by
gigaom.com, with Google heading the list.
Gigaom.com obtained the figures from
glassdoor.com.
Google pays its engineers a basic of $106,666, and a bonus of
$42,759, making a total of $149,425.
The Google total is well above that paid by Yahoo, which is
number five in the table, but Yahoo pays out a bigger basic.
Yahoo's basic is $114,280, whilst the bonus is a more modest
$12,441, giving a total of $126,721.
Going by the fortunes of the two firms though, perhaps Google's
bonus driven culture is working better.
Loss-making Sun Microsystems was still among the best payers, at
number seven. It paid out bigger basics than both Google and Yahoo
- $118,358 - but modest bonuses of $7,356 (the smallest in the top
10).
The Sun total was therefore $125,714. With Sun continuing to
lose cash heavily, and with its products failing to gain
significant traction, one may wonder how long this honeypot for
engineers can continue.
Virtualisation market darling VMware was number nine, offering a
total of $120,585.
